Mukesh Ambani: India’s Foremost Business Magnate
- Mukesh Ambani, a prominent Indian billionaire and business magnate, holds the distinction of being the richest person in India. He leads Reliance Industries Limited, a conglomerate founded by his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, and maintains the largest shareholding within the company.
- Born on April 19, 1957, in Yemen, Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani is the son of Dhirubhai Ambani. In 1958, his family relocated to India, driven by his father’s vision to establish a spices and yarn trading business. The Ambani family resided in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Mumbai until the 1970s.

- Mukesh Ambani earned his degree in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology. He initially pursued an MBA at Stanford University. However, as his father Dhirubhai Ambani was establishing Reliance and striving for profitability, Mukesh was called back to India to assist with the company’s crucial integration processes.
- Following his father’s guidance, Mukesh left his MBA program and joined Reliance in 1980 at the age of 23. He reported daily to Rasikbhai Meswani, who was then the Executive Director and a relative.
- After Dhirubhai Ambani suffered a stroke in 1986, the responsibility for the company transitioned to Mukesh Ambani and his younger brother, Anil Ambani. Mukesh Ambani founded Reliance Communications Ltd. and was tasked with overseeing the construction of the Patalganga petrochemical plant, at a time when Reliance was strategically investing in oil refinery and petrochemical operations.
- Following Dhirubhai’s passing on July 6, 2002, due to another stroke, significant disputes arose between Mukesh and Anil. A tribunal ultimately resolved the division in 2005, granting Mukesh control over Reliance Industries Limited and Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited.
- In 2010, Mukesh Ambani spearheaded the development of the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, India. This state-of-the-art facility boasts a production capacity of 1.24 million barrels of oil per day, a feat that garnered him nearly seven awards in that year alone.
- In 2013, Ambani announced a collaboration with Bharti Airtel to launch 4G network services. Three years later, in 2016, Reliance introduced Jio, a revolutionary telecommunications company that disrupted the market with its “free and unlimited offers,” significantly impacting other telecom providers across India.

- While many lauded Mukesh Ambani’s vision for a truly Digital India, some initially viewed Jio with skepticism. Considering Reliance’s past ventures in telecom, critics speculated that Jio was merely an ego project for Ambani, predicting its popularity would wane once charges were introduced. However, when Jio initiated its first paid plans in July 2017, it successfully converted 72 million of its 108 million users into prime-paid customers almost instantly. Jio rapidly emerged as the world’s fastest-growing telecom network, currently boasting 338 million subscribers.
- Mukesh Ambani married Nita Ambani in 1985. They have two sons and a daughter, and the entire family resides in the globally recognized Antilia building in Mumbai.

- In 2007, Ambani presented his wife, Nita Ambani, with a $60 million Airbus A319 for her 44th birthday. This custom-fitted airbus, capable of seating 180 passengers, includes luxurious amenities such as a living room, a bedroom, satellite television, Wi-Fi connectivity, a sky bar, a Jacuzzi, and a dedicated office space.
- Mukesh Ambani attributes his success to his college professors, William F. Sharpe and Man Mohan Sharma, who instilled in him the crucial principle of “Think Out of the Box.”

Antilia, Mukesh Ambani’s private residence in Mumbai, India, stands as the world’s largest and most expensive private home, valued at approximately $2.2 billion as of May 2020. This impressive 27-story structure spans 400,000 square feet. Antilia features extensive car parking for 168 vehicles, a dedicated car-service station, and three helipads on its rooftop. Inside, beyond the parking levels, there are nine elevators, a fully equipped gym, a swimming pool, a dance studio, a yoga studio, a grand ballroom, a 50-seat movie theater, and even a unique “snow room” with a snow generator, designed to provide an Antarctic experience even in Mumbai’s heat. - Mukesh Ambani demonstrates a strong interest in recreational activities, particularly sports. He is the proud owner of the Mumbai Indians team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During his teenage and younger years, he regularly watched Bollywood movies, often three films per week, noting:
The Necessity of Escapism in Life
- Mukesh Ambani held the title of the Richest Person in Asia from July 2018 to April 2020, and he has consistently been the richest individual in India for ten consecutive years. Even during the unprecedented economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which marked India’s worst economic phase in three decades, Ambani’s companies notably attracted significant foreign investment, demonstrating remarkable profitability within the country.
