- Joanne Rowling was born on 31st July 1965 in Bristol, England and grew up with her aircraft engineer father ‘Peter’ (at RollsRoyce factory) and mother ‘Anne’, science technician in Chemistry department at Wyedean Comprehensive.
- Called as Jo, Joanne was surrounded by books from early ages. She used to tell stories to her younger sibling Dianne. At six, she wrote her first story book, ‘Rabbit’. At eleven, she finished writing a novel about ‘seven cursed diamonds and the people who owned them’.

- Her schooling was the same where her mother worked. She remembered her teenage years as a non-easy one, since she had a strained relationship with her father & her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
- Failing in entrances of Oxford University, she joined BA French & Classics in Exeter University. She used to jazz around with books from University library, that clocked her a fine of 50 pounds for overdue books.
- After her degree in 1986, she left to London for her job as researcher in Amnesty International. “There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them”.

The publisher proffered an advance of 2500 pounds initially.
- By March of 1999, 300,000 copies were sold in the UK. “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” won numerous awards, including the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize, which is voted by both adults and children. In the United States, Rowling sold the book to Scholastic, which distributes it under the title “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” for more than $100,000, an unprecedented amount at the time. Then she bought her own apartment.
- In 2001, the film rights adaptation for the book was bought by Warner Bros., for a 7-figured amount for 1st two chapters. By the time, “Harry Potter and the Death Hallows – Part 2” was on-screen, it was the highest grossing movie franchise and the first Harry Potter movie reached nearly billion, becoming the most successful movie franchise in history.
- She completed her book series in 2007. The Harry Potter series of 7 books have sold more than 450 million copies and have translated into 67 languages. She was the first billionaire by writing books, according to Forbes; later she dropped off, by giving majority to charity.
