Google is working on a new “AI Mode” for its Search app on Android, which will introduce a more conversational and visual way to interact with the search engine. This new AI-powered search mode, also referred to as “AIM”, is different from the AI-generated summaries currently appearing in web browser searches. It appears Google wants to integrate its Gemini AI more deeply into the core search experience.
What to Expect from AI Mode
- Conversational Search: AI Mode will allow users to ask questions and engage in a back-and-forth conversation with Google, similar to how one might use ChatGPT. This will move beyond simply providing a list of links, with the AI explaining the search results directly to the user.
- Follow-Up Questions: Users will be able to ask follow-up questions to refine their searches and build context, making the search process more interactive.
- Visual Input: The mode will support visual inputs, allowing users to take a picture or add an existing one to their queries.
- Voice Input: A microphone button will be available for voice input.
- Dedicated Tab: The AI Mode may be accessible through a dedicated tab in the Google app. The app currently has four sections: Home, Search, Saved, and Notifications. AI Mode may become a fifth tab.
- Threads Entry Point: There might be a “Threads” entry point to show past search conversations.
How to Access AI Mode
Google is adding a new button to provide quick access to AI Mode. This shortcut will be available in the Google Search widget. Tapping the shortcut currently opens the search tab in the Google App, though it should ideally open the AI mode functionality once the feature is fully developed. There’s also a mysterious button in the top left corner, possibly linked to conversation history with Gemini.
AI Mode vs. Existing Google Search
Currently, when you tap the microphone in the Google app or search widget, you get a basic voice input experience that transcribes the query and shows a result page. AI Mode seeks to change this, offering a more concise response and the ability to ask follow-up questions. This new feature will differ from AI Overviews that provide AI-generated summaries.

AI Mode is still in development, and some features are not fully functional. Some of the features mentioned might not be released to the public. However, this new mode suggests a potential future for Google search that is more conversational and AI-driven.
