Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently dropped some valuable insights about the development of Search, & AI Agents with respect to rapidly changing technology. With this progress of AI, a redirection in everyone’s career path may be required, in order to be vibrant in the field, which is what this page will deal with.
Following Google I/O, Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared insights on the company’s advancements and the broader implications of AI. He described a feeling of confidence stemming from Google pushing the AI frontier in a fundamental way, bringing research to reality across many dimensions.
Pichai believes AI will be as profound as electricity and that we are in a new, more profound phase of the platform shift compared to previous shifts like mobile (smartphone).
Search is Evolving, Not Dying
Despite some concerns, Pichai stated that overall query growth is increasing in Google Search, including across Apple’s devices and platforms. He views AI Mode and AI Overviews as giving users more context and sending traffic to a wider range of sources and publishers. Google measures not just volume but also the quality of referral traffic, noting an increase in the time people spend on linked pages.
Pichai emphasized Google’s commitment to prioritizing sending traffic to the web, differentiating it from other emerging companies. He expects that, through this transition, AI Overviews will continue to grow and Google will end up sending more traffic over time, as has happened with previous transitions over 25 years.
The web itself is also evolving profoundly. The number of web pages available has increased by 45% in the last two years alone. Content creation is becoming more dynamic and cross-format, with AI making it zero friction to move between different formats because models are natively multimodal. Pichai noted that the power for people to create AI applications, sometimes called “vibe coding,” is barely being scratched.
The Rise of AI Agents and a Multiplicative Future
Pichai sees AI agents as a new, powerful format. He anticipates agent experiences will likely happen faster in enterprises because a CIO can mandate interoperability between systems. On the consumer side, the dynamic involves creators and businesses evaluating the value of participating in this new world, potentially seeing business growth by lowering friction and improving the user experience, similar to how businesses adopt credit cards despite the cost.
This new phase of AI is about products being developed, but critically, it’s enabling more people to build products than ever before. Pichai calls this the “multiplicative” part, making the process of creating and developing accessible to a much wider swath of humanity. He highlighted areas like coding IDs, NotebookLM, and new products like Flow as examples of this application layer emerging.
Implications for Your Career
What does this mean for careers? The core message is the increasing accessibility of creation tools. AI is unleashing creative power across society, enabling software engineers and creators alike in a “multiplicative” way. The “vibe coding” phase suggests a future where people can create AI applications without necessarily being traditional programmers.
Pichai envisions a future where the next generation of kids can program and create simply by thinking of something, though we haven’t fully comprehended the implications.
The evolving landscape suggests the importance of adaptability, embracing new creation tools, and potentially developing skills that span different content formats. Understanding how AI agents and platforms are changing interactions and value exchange will also be crucial as this new phase plays out over the next three to five years. This is an exciting time to be a consumer and a developer.
As pointed out by Nvidia’s Co-founder and CEOs Jensen Huang, “You will not be replaced by AI, but you will be replaced by the person who uses AI.” Similar to how we adapted to using smartphones on a daily-basis, we may have to be conscious and skilled enough to know how to use AI and the various AI tools available.
