India welcomes its first in-house quantum computer called “Indus” built by a Bengaluru-based startup ‘QpiAI’.

The race to master quantum technology is reshaping global innovation, and India has officially entered the commercial arena. Physicians worldwide are constantly seeking tools to swiftly identify the right drugs, especially against growing threats like drug-resistant bacteria.

Enter QpiAI-Indus, India’s first commercial and full-stack quantum computer, designed to take on some of humanity’s most complex challenges, starting with accelerating drug discovery.

QpiAI-Indus Quantum Computer

QpiAI-Indus represents a monumental step for India’s technological landscape. Developed by the Bengaluru-based firm QpiAI India Pvt Limited, this cutting-edge system was officially launched on World Quantum Day (April 14th). This launch serves as a major milestone under the Modi government’s National Quantum Mission (NQM), which was approved in 2023 to nurture and scale up an innovative quantum technology ecosystem. QpiAI is one of eight startups selected under this mission.

The project is dedicated to accelerating India’s quantum journey, aiming to make quantum computing technologies practical, accessible, and globally impactful. In the words of Nagendra Nagaraja, Founder and CEO of QpiAI, “Quantum computing is very important to actually move toward the next generation of intelligence modeling,” recognizing that the fundamental language of nature is quantum.

Why Quantum Matters for Drug Discovery

The applications of quantum computing are highly sought after in the healthcare sector, particularly in drug discovery. This new generation of computers promises to cut short the extensive time required for molecular simulations during drug development, potentially helping to solve the critical burden of antimicrobial resistance.

Traditional (classical) computers process information using bits—zeros and ones—which can only give the best possible approximation of an answer. However, quantum systems operate differently. They utilize core concepts from quantum physics, such as superposition, which means the basic unit (a qubit) can exist in multiple states simultaneously, much like a coin being both heads and tails while spinning.

This unique capability allows quantum computers to work on many possible answers concurrently, delivering results that are not rough guesses, but exact solutions. QpiAI aims to mirror the way nature presents its combinations, solving problems that classical computers are only able to approximate. Furthermore, quantum computers utilize entanglement, where two linked atoms instantly affect one another, enabling them to share information much faster and handle massive, complex problems more efficiently.

Inside the Machine: What Makes QpiAI-Indus Unique

QpiAI-Indus is classified as a full-stack quantum computing system. This means it encompasses both the necessary hardware and software, integrating advanced quantum processors, next-generation Quantum-HPC software platforms, and AI-enhanced quantum solutions.

Performance-wise, the system boasts 25 superconducting qubits, which are crucial for high-performance quantum computing.

A significant achievement is the indigenous nature of its construction. The firm has built all its parts locally, supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat push. The control electronics, the microprocessor, the overall wiring, and the fabrication are all indigenous. The only component currently sourced externally is the dilution refrigerator, which is necessary to cool the atoms down to extremely low temperatures. While the initial investment takes more energy than a classical counterpart, a quantum computer uses only a fraction of the energy of a regular GPU or CPU once it is operational.

Beyond drug discovery and life sciences, QpiAI is driving deep-tech innovation across several sectors, including materials science, mobility, logistics, sustainability, and climate action.

Building India’s Quantum Future

QpiAI is not just focused on hardware; they are heavily invested in building a sustainable quantum technology ecosystem and workforce in India. The company is training students and learners on how to use quantum computing and how to build programs for it.

QpiAI is focused on developing an Indian workforce that works right down to the processor level. As part of this drive, they are working with educational institutes, offering smaller quantum computers for teaching purposes. So far, more than 30,000 students and around 15 academic institutions have joined the company’s educational initiatives.

Looking ahead, the goal is to make this complex technology highly accessible. QpiAI CEO Nagendra Nagaraja foresees a time when client access will not require more than a laptop. Eventually, accessing the capabilities of the quantum computer could be akin to using ChatGPT—running on servers, but accessible from any mobile phone.
