Android 12 is the significant twelfth major release and 19th iteration of the Android mobile operating system, spearheaded by Google and developed by the Open Handset Alliance. Following the initial beta 1 release on May 8, 2021, its most recent iteration, beta 5, was launched on September 8, 2021. This new Android version is designed to meet user expectations with a streamlined, responsive user interface, along with compelling features and specifications that enhance the overall user experience. Let’s explore some of its exciting new capabilities.
Experience the Redesigned Quick Tiles in Android 12

This “quick tiles” feature in Android 12 introduces a completely refreshed look for the notification panel. While older Android versions typically displayed round icons when you pulled down the notification bar, Android 12 now presents them as aesthetically pleasing rounded rectangles, offering a modern, tab-like interface.
Native Scrolling Screenshot Functionality

While some smartphone manufacturers already offer this capability, Google officially integrates the scrolling screenshot feature into its Android 12 operating system. This functionality was initially introduced with Android 12 beta 3.
To capture more of your screen content, the scrolling screenshot feature is easily accessible. After taking a regular screenshot, simply tap the “capture more” button. This allows you to extend the captured area, and subsequently, you can freely edit and crop the screenshot to your preference.
Introducing Quick Tap for Enhanced Device Control

Just as double-tapping the screen can activate the display, some users may be familiar with the functionality of double-tapping the back of their phone for similar purposes. For those who haven’t experienced it, Android 12’s Quick Tap feature goes beyond merely waking up the screen. It allows users to perform various customizable actions, such as taking screenshots, opening notifications, or quickly launching Google Assistant, all based on individual preferences.
It is important to note that the Quick Tap feature is anticipated to be an exclusive offering for Google Pixel phones.
Android 12’s Visual Transformation: Material You & Dynamic Color Extraction

Beyond performance enhancements, Android 12 introduces “Material You,” a collection of exciting new visual elements for the display. This overhaul revitalizes nearly every aspect of the user experience, from colors and shapes to themes and animations. A key innovation is the dynamic color extraction: when you set a new wallpaper on Android 12, the operating system intelligently extracts prominent design elements and colors from it. This process then seamlessly modifies your handset’s system colors to create a cohesive and personalized theme based on your lock screen or home screen background.
This concept of adaptive theming might be familiar to users who have observed how Instagram stories automatically generate background colors derived from the shared photo.
Enhanced Privacy & Security Features in Android 12
Google appears to be aligning with current privacy trends, potentially in response to companies like Apple, which have emphasized user privacy and impacted the adtech industry with recent operating system updates offering opt-out options for cross-app tracking. Android 12 introduces several significant changes aimed at enhancing user control, security, and data privacy. These new functionalities primarily focus on camera, microphone, and location access, encompassing:
- A comprehensive privacy dashboard, enabling users to easily view which applications are actively using the microphone, camera, or accessing location data.
- A distinct indicator appearing in the upper right corner of the screen whenever the camera or microphone is in active use.
- The flexibility to share an approximate location instead of a precise one, providing greater control over personal data.
- System-wide shortcuts designed to quickly disable access to the microphone or camera for all applications.
- A “private compute core,” a dedicated environment where machine learning functions will execute. This ensures that sensitive information is restricted to authorized services. For instance, when using the Google Assistant, voice data will be processed and stored locally on the device; however, the precise technical implementation and potential data sharing with Google remain to be fully clarified.
Optimized On-Device Search with AppSearch Integration
The universal device search, also known as on-device search, has now been officially implemented in Android 12 beta 5, specifically within the Pixel Launcher’s app drawer.
The search bar integrated into the Pixel Launcher provides a robust capability to locate local files and content, including installed applications, mirroring features found in many third-party launchers for rapid access. Furthermore, if your initial search doesn’t yield the desired local result, you have the option to “Search on Google.” To illustrate, imagine searching for a song title within a music player application; this query is efficiently channeled through AppSearch for swift retrieval of relevant matching songs.
Indeed, you might recognize its similarity to the conventional “Cortana search” feature found in Windows operating systems.
Upon your initial interaction with this feature, a brief tutorial will guide you. This tutorial also offers preferences to disable keyboard pop-ups and allows you to toggle the visibility of various search results, such as Shortcuts, People, Settings, and Pixel Tips. You have the flexibility to enable or disable these categories based on your specific needs and preferences.
Streamlined Wi-Fi Password Sharing with Nearby Share

The process of sharing Wi-Fi passwords often presents a challenge, typically involving a frustrating search for a written note that is rarely found when most needed.
However, Android 12 significantly simplifies this task. Users can now wirelessly share their Wi-Fi passwords utilizing Android’s integrated Nearby Share feature. This functionality was introduced and became active in the Android 12 developer beta, which has recently been made available for download.
To share a Wi-Fi network, navigate to Settings, select Wi-Fi, choose the desired network, and then tap “Share.” You will be presented with options to share the network either via a QR code or through Nearby Share. If you opt for Nearby Share, your phone will scan for nearby compatible devices. The recipient’s device will then receive a notification prompting them to accept the network share. For security purposes, the actual password will not be displayed; however, once the receiver accepts, their device will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network.
Introducing Redesigned Emoji in Android 12
Google has unveiled its newest emoji collection, featuring revisions to almost 1,000 designs. These updates aim to improve clarity at smaller sizes, enhance accuracy, and ensure better cross-platform compatibility.
Google has confirmed that while these emoji updates will arrive on Android 12 later in the year, they will be rolled out across Gmail, Google Chat, YouTube Live Chat, and Chrome OS even sooner, within the current month.
Android 12’s Smart App Hibernation for Storage & Battery Optimization
With Android 12, Google is further developing the “unused apps” concept introduced in Android 11 through its new app hibernation feature. Beyond automatically revoking permissions for applications that are not actively used, Android 12 is also expected to clear temporary files associated with these apps, effectively freeing up valuable storage space on your device.
XDA successfully enabled the new “unused apps” section, accessible via the “App Info” settings for individual applications. This section includes a dedicated toggle for revoking app permissions and reclaiming storage. After manually hibernating several apps, XDA observed that the unused apps setting displayed applications that had not been launched in several months. The feature’s description indicates that Android 12 will not only remove permissions from these apps but also halt notifications to conserve battery life and delete temporary files to free up additional storage space.
