Google’s “Ask for Me” Lets AI Handle Your Calls to Businesses

Tired of waiting on hold or making phone calls to businesses? Google is testing a new feature called “Ask for Me” that uses AI to call local businesses on your behalf, saving you time and hassle. This innovative tool is currently in an experimental phase within Google’s Search Labs.

How “Ask for Me” Works

The “Ask for Me” feature aims to streamline how users gather information, such as pricing and service availability, from local businesses. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

Current Availability and Future Plans

Currently, “Ask for Me” is in its experimental phase and only available for nail salons and auto shops. However, Google plans to expand the feature to more industries in the future.

Keep in mind that because of capacity constraints, some users may be placed on a waitlist before their call can be processed.

The “Ask for Me” feature is powered by the same AI technology that Google uses in its restaurant reservation feature on Google Search and Google Maps. This technology, called Duplex, uses AI to make reservations or book appointments over the phone.

Businesses can opt out of receiving AI-generated calls if they prefer. They can do this through their Google Business Profile settings or by informing Google when they receive a call. Google also has call quotas in place to ensure that businesses don’t get too many automated calls. Any information collected from the calls can be used to assist similar requests from other users.

The “Ask for Me” feature signifies a major shift in how people interact with businesses. By potentially eliminating wait times and improving access to real-time information, AI-powered calling services like this could revolutionize customer service and business communications.

While there may be some confusion as businesses adjust to receiving calls from AI, this tool could be very useful for users who prefer not to make phone calls.
