Google Employees Benefits & Work-Life in Google – All you Need to Know

Google has become a tech-giant that no one in the world ever touched the feat of Google’s, in terms of wide involvement of service and products. Google not just stuns people by its way of servicing, products, innovation and stuffs, but also in its rule / policies it implements for its employees. Worklife in Google greatly benefit both the company and employees. Without wasting much time here, we can head to ‘How Google does it’.

Happiness Project

The most affordable appreciation a company could give its employees is a comfortable working environment ensuring their happiness / satisfaction of working. To fetch it, Google had driven the way, wherein the firm tries of satisfying and getting the work completed simultaneously, so called “Happiness project” (the name I had self-assigned for aptness). Google calls it as ‘80/20’ Rule – Googlers are allowed to dedicate 80% of time to their primary job and 20% working on passion projects that they believe will help the company.

This proffers the employee to work on their interested area that would simultaneously uplift the company by means.

What an idea sirji!

Not 200 feet away from Food

Googlers are extremely well fed, getting healthy and varied breakfast, lunch, and even dinner if they stay late – for free. There’s a lot of food inside and is delicious, says a Forbes writer who toured Google’s headquarters. The most pessimistic explanation for free food (as well as onsite haircuts, complimentary laundry, nap pods and the like) is that Google wants to create a workplace where workers don’t want to leave, and so it’s a thinly-veiled attempt to get more raw work hours out of their employees. Cofounder Sergey Brin once commanded his architects and office designers that “No one should be more than 200 feet away from food”.

A slightly more optimistic explanation is that happy workers are good workers, and that these perks provide a return on investment by keeping employees happy and satisfied.

Nooglers

The first day at a new employer can be daunting wherever you work, but at Google it’s that little bit more challenging – new starters’ first week means being called a Noogler and wearing a rainbow hat with a propeller on the top and the word Noogler embroidered across it.

Nooglers

Luckily for the Nooglers they only have to wear the hat at their first TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday) meeting, which is now scheduled monthly once since November 2019.

So how long a newly hired Googler will be a ‘Noogler’?

“When I got to my desk on my first day, there was a colorful helium balloon tied to a goodie bag on my desk. I was jokingly told that I was no longer a Noogler when the balloon sank. That took about six months”, a senior software engineer at Google. Though the time-period is not fixed, the upper bound is 1 year, for becoming Googler from Noogler.

Xooglers

Xooglers are the alumni group of Google, that also consists of current interested Googlers, who have all come together to help each other in advancing the ambitions in startup ecosystem. The Xooger.co community consists of startup founders, early team members, angel investors, VCs and mentors.

Dogs are Welcome!

Dogs are allowed in Google Office

Googlers are free to bring their pets to work.

A former Googler describes why bringing his dog to work is so great. He says that it not only helped keep his energy up, but brought spontaneous joy to his coworkers and helped him meet people he probably would not have otherwise.

Here’s his whole answer:

Though managing a dog between meetings can sometimes be challenging, having her with me meant that every few hours I needed to get outside and take a break which helped me manage my energy. In addition my dog brought a lot of spontaneous joy to my colleagues who sometimes sought her out when needing a break from an arduous task. For everyone looking out your work window to see dogs chasing each other or running after tennis balls really warms the spirit. Eventually my dog became far better known than I was and she oddly enough ended up introducing me to a lot of people I wouldn’t otherwise have met. The benefits of allowing dogs in the office far outweigh the costs, and the increase in job satisfaction for those with dogs or who like dogs far outweighs the mild annoyance of those miserable individuals who somehow make it through life unaffected by wagging tails and contagious enthusiasm. If there is an easy Google benefit almost anyone can replicate, bringing dogs into the workplace is it.

Wear Clothes & Don’t be a jerk

There isn’t a dress code prescribed by Google, but the rule of it goes crazy or mindless like “You must Wear Something”. That’s what Eric Schmidt too told, while inquired in a company meeting.

Free things

Besides food, there exists a handful of benefits for the Googlers, especially when it comes to free-things. Shirts, laptop, phone, headphones, backpacks, entertainment, and gym are the few, to list though.

Indeed, the company also awards ‘massage credits’ for a successful completion of a project, where in you can redeem the credits for free 1hour massage in the company itself.

That’s the reason Googlers outrank employees from every other company in terms of $value of their productivity and profit generation. The average Google employee generates more than $1.2 million in revenue each year. Yahoo currently produces just $449,000 per employee, and Microsoft $783,000. This level of productivity has pushed Google stock into the stratosphere, with share prices recently topping $2700 – no small feat, given that Google only went public in August 2004 at a price of $85.

The times had changed now in this century as ‘it’s difficult to live without Google’. As clearly said by Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos, “Treat Google like a Mountain, You can climb the mountain, but you can’t move it.”
